What’s new in Rentby
Product rentals for Shopify, by the day or for fixed periods, with refundable deposits. Here’s what’s changed recently.

Safer checkout and smoother locations
- Locations: each location can have its own closed dates with a reason shoppers see, a delivery zone can be set to deliver from one location (it is picked for the shopper), a cart rental at a location that stopped renting tells the shopper to remove it and add it again, and a printer at a location that stopped renting shows as No longer renting with a Remove button.
- Receipt slips now print a [ ] box beside each item to tick off when packed, the same as Printby, and the test slip names the location it prints for.
- A receipt printer at each location: with two or more rental locations, give a location its own printer on the Receipt printer page and slips for its rentals print there. Everything else prints on your main printer.
- Two shops in one cart: a shopper can pick a different location for another rental; they see a heads-up instead of a blocked Add to cart, and each rental is held at its own location.
- One printer for several Dropfeed apps: paste another app’s printer link in the printer section to get one combined link, so Readyby, Rentby and Printby can all print to the same Star printer.
- Delivery rentals from one of several locations now say Delivers from instead of Pickup location on the order, the order card, receipt slips and your calendar link.
- Rename, add or close a location in Shopify and Rentby updates the product page and checkout straight away, without you opening Rentby.
- The location list on the product page shows each location’s city and state, like Downtown (Austin, TX).
- With two or more locations, shoppers pick a location before the dates. Nothing is chosen for them: the dates stay greyed out with the line Choose a pickup location first to see its dates.
- The rental calendar now shows in Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese on stores in those languages, for any wording you haven’t set yourself. Four new boxes under Storefront text let you change the new location wording.
- With two or more rental locations, checkout now stops a shopper who picks a different one of your locations as their pickup point than the one their rental is booked at, and an old cart pointing at a location you no longer rent from.

A more consistent look
- The Receipt printer page shows what a slip looks like for a pickup, a local delivery and a return, before you print anything.
- Slips history has a Print button on each slip, plus Print selected and Delete selected for several at once.
- Receipt slips now say PICKUP or LOCAL DELIVERY across the top to match the rental, with the rental dates under the order number. Return slips still say RETURN. Slips look the same in Rentby, Readyby and Printby.
- A status line on the home page shows whether rental dates are on your store, with a pulsing green dot, Online, and when they last loaded. Notices no longer carry a “!” tile, and not-live ones are amber so they stand out.
- Sharper text: the app now uses Inter, the same font as the Shopify admin, on every page, button and menu.
- Repairs: at check in, tick Came back damaged (and how many, for a rental of more than one). Those units go to the new Repairs page, come off the item’s count so nobody can book them, and Shopify holds them as Damaged. Press Repaired to put them back in service, or Write off one that can’t be fixed. Print and Download CSV sit at the top of the page.
- Not returned: an overdue rental now has a button for an item that is not coming back. It closes the rental, keeps the deposit, and takes the units off the item’s count so they stop being booked. The deposit can still be refunded later.
- Long rentals: the What shoppers pay table now runs to 30, 90, 180 and 365 days when the item allows them, and Check a length adds any number you type. The editor now says plainly that a blank longest rental means up to 60 days, and how to allow months.
- Rental items list is slimmer, with smaller pictures and the price and deposit on one line.
- The Dashboard number tiles are tinted and centered: counts in light blue, deposits held in green, the booked rate in violet, and anything overdue or over your plan in red. The extra grey line under each label is gone.
- On Rentals and Today, Check out, Check in and Refund deposit stay on one line instead of wrapping, every button and filter is the same height, and the check in and refund forms open in a tidy panel under the rental.
- Rental items list: bigger pictures, the item name opens it, a clear Edit button and a plain red Remove link. The receipt printer page uses the same blue buttons and colors as the rest of Rentby. Every day picker now uses the same blue boxes with a tick, the Rentals and Today filters are neat rectangles, and the buttons on Rentals, Today, Calendar and the item editor use the same light blue as the rest of Rentby.

Stock comes back on check in
- Check in puts the units back into Shopify’s stock. For products that track quantity, an order sets its units aside, Check out takes them off the shelf, and Check in now adds them back at the location they went out from, so the stock count goes down and up with your rentals. The check in message says how many went back.
- On a rental product, Add to cart and Buy it now are greyed out until the shopper picks their dates, the same as Readyby, so nobody wonders why the button did nothing.
- The What shoppers pay table on a rental item now shows every length you enter: shortest, longest, each discount and each fixed period, plus the common lengths in between.

Every rental on one page, and Rentby on the order page
- Rent from more than one location. Turn locations on under Schedule, Locations (one Rent out from here switch per Shopify location), set units per location on each rental item, and shoppers pick where they collect with a Pick up at choice above the dates. Availability, checkout checks, the Dashboard, Rentals, Calendar, order card, slips and calendar link all follow the location. One location? Nothing changes. Rentby asks Shopify for permission to read your locations the next time you open it.
- The picker keeps a shopper’s dates only while a rental is in the cart. Empty the cart, or place the order, and the next product starts with a clean calendar.
- At checkout, where Shopify prints one total for the rental and its deposit, each part now says what it costs underneath: “Rental: $60.00 for 3 days” and “Refundable deposit: $30.00”.
- Adding a rental item now fills in Price per day from the product’s store price and Units you own from its Shopify stock count (for products that track quantity), and the picker leaves out the deposit product. Picking a product that is already a rental item opens it instead of making a second one.
- The hex code next to each picker color is now a box you can type into, for when the color dialog only offers red, green and blue.
- The admin is tighter: thinner cards, smaller buttons and text, so more fits on the screen.
- The Dashboard shows today only by default: one list box that scrolls, with a chip for Today (going out and coming back), Overdue, Over capacity, Not picked up and Returned, deposit held, each with its count. Rentals are one line each now, order, item, dates, status, deposit and buttons in columns, smaller and tighter so more fit on the screen. The Rentals page uses the same layout.
- New Rentals page in the menu, right after the Dashboard: every rental in your store on one page, grouped by start date, with Check out, Check in and Refund deposit on each line. Active (booked, out and over capacity) shows by default; switch to Booked, Out, Returned, Cancelled or All, and search by order number or item. No more opening orders one at a time.
- Check out now marks the order fulfilled in Shopify: the rental line and its deposit line are fulfilled the moment you check the item out, with no email to the customer, so rental orders stop sitting at Unfulfilled. And the other way round: fulfil or mark a rental picked up from the order in Shopify and Rentby checks it out for you. Rentby asks Shopify for the fulfillment permission the next time you open it.
- Refunding a deposit that was kept at check-in now asks why it is being refunded (after a review or a dispute, say), and the reason joins the line’s history after the kept reason. Any other refund can carry a reason too.
- Every rental line now shows its history: when it went out and came back, and each deposit refund with its date, including refunds made from the order in Shopify. On the Dashboard, the Rentals page and the order card.
- The Rentals list fills the window and scrolls inside, so the page itself never scrolls.
- Check in now asks Refund the deposit? whenever a deposit is still held. Yes checks the item in and refunds the deposit in one click. No, keep it asks why (damage, late return, missing parts) and saves the reason on the rental; Refund deposit is still there for a part refund later. Same on the Dashboard, the Rentals page and the order card.
- Open any rental order in Shopify and a Rentby card shows each rental on it: status (Booked, Out, Returned), the dates, whether it is for delivery, how many days late, and the deposit held. Check out, Check in (with an optional note) and Refund deposit work right there, the same as on the Dashboard, so you can handle a rental from Orders without opening the app. To turn it on, scroll to Blocks at the bottom of any order, click + Block, choose Rentby and click the pin icon on the card. That is once per store; pinned, it is on every order page.
- Greyed out or Greyed and crossed out now applies to the dropdown lists as well as the calendar. Choose Greyed and crossed out under Schedule, Storefront text and days that can’t be picked get an ✕ in front of them in the lists, next to the reason.
- Tip: in Shopify Orders, filter by the tag
rental and save the filter as a Rentals view, so your rental orders are one click away.

Dashboard, picker styles and simpler item days
- Showing unavailable days in the date list? You can now pick which kinds appear: blackout dates, days you’re closed, an item’s own days off, fully booked days and notice days, each on or off. The calendar still explains every greyed-out day.
- Local delivery, on Starter and up. Turn on Offer local delivery under Schedule, Local delivery and shoppers choose pickup or delivery above the dates. Delivery asks for their postal code, says “We deliver here.” or that you don’t deliver there yet, and shows the fee for their zone. Add a zone for each area you serve, with postal codes (wildcards like
325* work) and an optional fee. The fee is shown, not charged: set the real charge in Shopify under Settings, Shipping and delivery, Local delivery. The Dashboard marks rentals to Deliver and Collect, and the Calendar, receipt slips and calendar link show delivery too.
- Days that can’t be picked now say why. Tap or hover a greyed-out day on the calendar to see “Closed: Thanksgiving” (your blackout Reason), “Closed” on a day you’re closed, “Fully booked”, “Needs more notice” inside your notice time, or “Not available on this day” for a product or item with its own days. The Reason field on Blackout dates now says shoppers see it. The date list can also show those days greyed out with the same words: choose Show them greyed out under Schedule, Storefront text (they are left out by default).
- Blackout dates now save with Shopify’s Save and Discard bar at the top, the same as Schedule, for new closures and edits. Removing one asks first.
- The receipt printer is now part of Starter and up, the same as Readyby. Every other feature stays on every plan.
- Choose how shoppers pick dates under Schedule, How shoppers pick the dates: Dropdown lists (the new default), Calendar, always open or Calendar, opens on click. The same three choices as Readyby.
- Dates go one step at a time on the calendar: Return is greyed out until a start date is picked, then Start and earlier days are greyed out while the return date is picked. Clear dates starts over.
- Today is now called Dashboard. Its 14 day chart shows the weekday and date under each bar.
- Going out, coming back and overdue now show on the Dashboard only, not on the home page.
- The menu follows setup order: Rental items, then Schedule and Blackout dates. Settings is now called Schedule, the same as Readyby.
- Rental item days start with every day selected. Click a day to turn it off.

Rentby launches
- Rent out products by the day, by the night, by the hour or for fixed periods, with cheaper rates for longer rentals, an optional flat fee and a refundable deposit, all in Shopify’s own checkout.
- Shoppers pick a start and return date on the product page and see the price and deposit before they add to cart. Booked dates are greyed out.
- Every rental is checked again at checkout, so a unit can’t be double booked, even from an old cart.
- The Dashboard shows what goes out, comes back and is late, with one click check out, check in and deposit refunds. Calendar shows every item day by day.
- Each rental item can set its own days to go out and come back, and hourly items use your opening hours with 30 or 60 minute steps.
- Every feature is on every plan. Free covers 10 rentals a month; Starter, Pro and Scale cover 75, 300 or unlimited for $19, $49 or $99 a month.
